I Was a Teenage Exocolonist is a rare type of game that presents a narrative of breadth and depth and then allows players to explore that narrative through repeated reenactments of the groundhog day event. There are over 600,000 words in the Exocolonist text, but you will only encounter maybe 1/8th of that text or so in each playthrough. You control Sol (who you can name any name you’d like), male, female, or a non-binary character who grows from 10 to 20 years in the age of the 10 that one playthrough of Exocolonist includes.

Exceptionally high-quality writing.

I Was a Teenage Exocolonist doesn’t just read like a well-written play; it reads like a well-written book. Each character is written like a real person, strong yet engaging, interesting, and unique in their own voice. Dialogue is fun and engaging, and never feel awkward or tone-deaf. Descriptions of places and events are concise, evocative, and informative. Through them, the alien world in which the story unfolds is presented with startling clarity and life.

Great sci-fi.

The show combines the fun, upbeat, inquisitive spirit of classic sci-fi with a modern tendency in a sharp, topical critique of contemporary society brilliantly. Some of the scenes depicted really resonated with me because of how relevant they are to me personally, and are so true for so many other people around the world. There’s no shortage of trauma and tragedy in the young Exocolo’s life

Meaningful decisions.

I Was a Teenage Exocolonist does an excellent job of giving you control over the narrative while never making you feel like you’re more important than everyone else. In fact, it’s very likely that you’ll feel powerless and confused on your first playthrough, and the game pulls no punches when it comes to the consequences of your actions, or inaction.

It takes work to succeed, it takes curiosity and exploration to figure out how to positively affect the events of the story. However, once you get used to the game, you’ll find that your actions influence everything: the resolution of the final conflict, the fate of other characters, your own life after the end, and everything in between.  There are also a few “curveball” endings that completely change the background events of the story or your character’s place in it.

There are so many options for love. They are quite extensive, and you can go into different types of relationships with some of the characters. Taking polygamy is also an option in a few situations, although not everyone in the game is good at it. That said, romance isn’t the focus of the game, so don’t expect much here. Its purpose is to fully portray the teenage experience, and some characters can’t stay without a friend if they don’t assert themselves.

Amazing artwork and OST.

The big synth soundscapes are forever ingrained in my brain. I don’t feel like saying much about the artwork – just look at the screenshots. Along with great backgrounds and character design, the game also features a number of stunning full-screen visuals for certain story events. Seeing the various personality sprites of the players and all of your friends as they grew and changed as people were very moving and fun, really creating a deep level of connection for all of them.

In the end, what really struck me the most besides the fact that the highest quality of all aspects of the game is its essence of compassion, love, joy, and respect. It’s rare to see a piece of media that is so thoughtful and insightful and focuses on the greater value of each person, regardless of their personality or worldview, and the wonder of relationships real, deeply human. This is the ultimate achievement of this game for me, and what makes it such a great piece of art within and beyond video game media.
