One of the biggest selling points of Ultimate Spider-Man was that it allowed you to play the game as Spider-Man and Venom. The story takes place after the Venom arc and each character has their own story to unfold. Spidey investigates Trask’s factories to learn more about Venom. Venom is trying to avoid capture, there are different story paths and how the two stories tie together is pretty cool stuff. It’s all very cinematic and something I really enjoyed. As you’d expect, both Venom and Spider-Man have their own attacks and gameplay that’s fun.

Ultimate Spider-Man is an amazing game. At this time many manufacturers are using cell phone images and I think this is one of the best things to do. It really gives the game that comic book style and feels like you’re playing through an interactive story which is great. Manhattan and Queens are very well recreated and the game has character just in how it looks. It also has decent voice acting, although hearing Spidey say “I own you” was a bit to my liking.

Pros:

• The story told here is very funny and very similar to comic books
• Photographs of cells survive to this day
• You can play as Spider-Man and Venom
• I’d say this is better than Spider-Man 2

Cons:

• Some of the things Spidey says are kind of corny
• It may take a little time to get used to the web traffic

Ultimate Spider-Man is a better game than previous iterations in the series, although it still relies heavily on the ‘swing through the city and knocks down crooks’ concept. It’s a shame that this game has a good story and good bosses, that the graphics and sound are also pretty good… and that the game is mediocre at the end. The console versions seem better to us.

Overall, I was really hoping this would be completely different from SM2. But unfortunately for me, there was nothing new except for the look of the game, and you can basically play as a villain. This game should be put on your first “rent” list unless you’ve never played Spider-Man 2, which means you might find this very interesting.
