TMNT Shredder’s Revenge might actually be the best shooter I’ve ever played. Not only can you relive the greatness of TMNT and rock out to 90’s-style TMNT music, whether it’s old metal or hip hop, but you also get a dodge button! Beat ’em ups always feel like a ton of RNG because it’s only a matter of time before you hit it. In TMNT Shredder’s Revenge, there is actually a skill check!
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder’s Revenge is another excellent Beat Em Up by Dotemu. Even if it lacks the depth and complex novelization of its predecessors, this focuses more on the fast-paced “Capcom Style” style of combat rather than the slower, more tactical approach that Streets of Rage had. Instead of having a “hold” button that lets you grab weapons in the air, this game features a wave button that lets you run away from almost anything.
The combat
The combat has the right amount of audio feedback, where all of the character’s movements feel well executed. No matter which fighter you choose, the animations are smooth and the response is fast. That’s not too surprising, considering the animation keyframes are inspired by a variety of old-school fighting games. One thing that gets worse with more players on screen is determining if you’re getting hit or not, as your character’s screams and roars get lost in the mix of effects and the most reliable way is to respond to force, assuming that you use the gamepad.
The Art
The art direction is solid with highly detailed pixel art, animations and eye-pleasing, which is consistent throughout the experience. It’s easy to tell where the playing field is and the futures, while beautiful, don’t shy away from the battle.
Environmental hazards and indestructible objects mix well, some can be distinguished by their animation or the way they are marked, but a few others are more subtle in this regard. It’s easy to lose track when there are multiple characters on screen, especially during multiplayer, but there is a dedicated button that briefly displays an icon above your sprite.
The soundtrack
The soundtrack has a retro-feeling vibe, featuring both instrumental and vocal tracks. The device tracks like something out of a proper arcade cabinet or home console, except without any channel or device restrictions, so it’s one of classic video game audio and modern techniques. The soundtracks come out perfectly and aim for the feeling of the early 90s, with professional production quality, so they are catchy and catchy. Example: “Panic in the sky!”.
Pros:
- It really captures the essence of the Turtles and the vibes of the 90s
- The controls are simple and awesome.
- The animations are great
- Integrated multiplayer works well enough
- A suitable length for a beat’em up game (15 stages)
- A good variety of enemies with different strategies
- Despite its simplicity its a very well-designed game
Cons
- The loot system is poorly designed. Gives you a super full mockup. He runs away, taunts, then occasionally flips out.
- Charge attacks are very limited unless you use them at all
- Throwing attacks have no volatility which makes them very dangerous
- Chill and Okay skills are very easy, even for new players to master
Neutral Stuff About TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge
Shredder’s Revenge is a short but sweet experience. If you are looking for discovery, then the game offers a character development system, which is the bluest part of the achievements. Trying all the characters and mastering the highest difficulty is the end game and nothing more unless you go to personal problems like getting hurt. It is one of the titles that can be introduced to the game for most people, so it will be a good way to revisit the title from time to time.
I was spoiled by Streets of Rage 4’s endless mode expansion and I’d like to see one here too, but it’s good if the game stays the same: the original area has been achieved, and it’s a finished product.
The basic combat mechanics are shared across all available characters, and there are no different “classes”. Since the basic combat framework remains common, you can choose whichever character you want, and you’ll be able to do more or less the same thing.
Each character has its own speed, attack reach, several shifting attacks, and unique super attacks, but that’s about as far as it goes. After playing through all the characters, I couldn’t really pick a favorite, as the differences were minimal.
There’s no added depth that you can experience by choosing more diverse characters, but it also means that you can easily teach someone how to play effectively, and they’ll be having fun within minutes.
Conclusion:
Shredder’s Revenge is easily the best TMNT game I’ve ever played: it’s easy to pick up and play, the visual style is appealing and is inspired by the TV show, the combat is responsive and satisfying, and the development team went through the trouble of having the original TV cast to reprise their voice acting roles, the soundtrack is period-appropriate, is engaging and fits the game nicely.
It’s amazing how a game like this can be so fun, modern, and relevant in 2022. Especially since the IP has reached such an advanced age many years after its popularity peaked.
But it does. In fact, it manages to squeeze every last drop of “turtle soup” out of the franchise and establish itself as the best version of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, in the game, to date. Without a doubt, this is one of the greatest hits of all time.
Considering the additions in layers, the ability to access six-person co-op, the loving tweaks to highlight its importance, along with its hearty mix of nostalgia, this is (surprisingly) as good a time as any to play The Game. Ninja Turtles.
