Composition, Wording, and Writing:
As its title suggests, the game is set in Backrooms, an alternate dimension parallel to our own. People get there in a variety of ways, but the most common is ‘non-clipping’ through a solid object – a rare, but still possible event that will trap you in this treacherous reality. That’s what happens in Josh’s first (and for now, only) available story, which puts you in the shoes of a hapless movie theater attendant, as he gets lost in the now-popular yellow-walled Level Zero.
Exploration and level Design
Most of the time you’ll control your enthusiasm and just walk (or run) around the current level looking for an exit. In canon lore, exiting a level may require you to interact with random objects, nock clip (pass) a wall, or perform certain actions. This aspect wasn’t fully featured here, as most of the time your connection to another level would be a mysterious triangle-shaped elevator instead. While exploring, you’ll find items that definitely seem out of place (as they should), and notes or diaries from people who explored the levels before you.
Puzzles and Stealth
During the adventure, there will be only one puzzle and a short chase sequence featuring an entity, one of the countless unusual creatures inhabiting this strange dimension and oftentimes, not at all friendly.
You have to roam around level zero and find notes to collect the password for a certain machine which is the key to your escape.
This quest will have some vague clues, but it will feel like looking for needles in a haystack, and will certainly be the segment that will take up most of your time. Despite being the best level in terms of quality, it’s not a bad time.
Pros:
- Impressive visuals contribute to providing an immersive experience every time.
- Faithful recreations of the most popular backroom levels, with Level 0 being the top pick.
- Quality musical score / SFX that harmonizes well in different situations.
- Lots of easter eggs and extra content hidden for attentive seekers.
Cons:
- There are some “out-of-canon” elements, which can (and will) ruin the immersion at times.
- Extremely linear gameplay even for a narrative adventure: there are very few puzzles or threats (and I will note, that backrooms are considered a very dangerous place).
Overall:
I want to recommend this game because it has impressive graphics and gameplay.
