The game has all the glory, theme, art, music, creatures, even story, and ruthlessness of the game; all of which manages to be cohesive in a way that feels seamless.
Speaking of the gameplay, it’s a very limited take on dungeon crawlers, keeping only the essential parts to cut down on time-wasting time and turn it into a turn-based puzzle game where the error in ‘one can spell your doom. And trust me, there are pitfalls waiting for you at every step…
It has a messy aspect to room layouts, loot, and other special effects, but the majority of interactions remain completely controlled, giving the game a high-skill ceiling. A very wide range of materials allows for interesting combinations, although some materials feel clearly sturdier than others, it doesn’t preclude using most of them depending on the pattern.
Now you might say I’m just singing the game’s praises… and you’d be right because I immediately fell in love with it when I tried the demo! Now, I know it has some flaws, sometimes it’s unfair with no escape opportunities, sometimes big strokes of luck can kill you instantly, or the first ugly room which causes you to snowball into a vicious circle of weakness.
And all of this can happen, that’s true, but I’ve played enough to tell you that it can be greatly reduced through choice. Skills are also a big part of learning how to mitigate the effects of randomness by making good decisions to mitigate risks. And if you are still being killed unfairly? That’s no issue, you can just restart and jump right in again thanks to faster playback! Then die, and die again, until you have the strength to overcome your fears and shadows!
