Earth’s Shadow is a fun shooter with a great atmosphere. I really enjoyed the platforming and puzzle elements that complement the combat, making exploration fun and rewarding. If you like chain games and want to try one with sci-fi elements and a gameplay style with a dark Gothic Lovecraftian aesthetic.

The nightmarish decline of a science fiction dungeon crawler. Alien scares abound, with an atmosphere of desperation on a planet of horror where everything wants to kill you.

The story

The story was pretty basic, nothing terrible or over-the-top, but nothing too amazing either. It was ready, but it didn’t carry much of the game, I was really impressed with how many scenes there were in the game, considering this was made by one person. There were some minor early access bugs, but very minor, and nothing that stopped me from enjoying or playing the game. If you’re looking for a fun sci-fi third-person shooter with RPG elements.

The graphics remind me of a HEAVY METAL MAGAZINE story by Simon Bisley where visceral violence abounds and is your only way to survive.

Scary and gory sci-fi scenes like a 1960’s Italian doomsday movie or some alien scene ala PLANET OF THE VAMPIRES. The inhuman inhabitants of this plane of death are exquisitely beautiful in their strangely monstrous biology, be it machine or flesh.

The third person view is well handled and never gets in the way and feel very comfortable in the same way that the first person view does for me.

The sound is haunting, as if coming from the pits of hell, a net of endless black holes in the doom it brings to all who enter it. One of the cybernetic characters looks a lot like Ron Pearlman which is cool.

The UI is easy to use and straight to the point with no confusing or silly nonsense to break the immersion. Lots of cool upgrades and crafting along with loot to pick up. There are materials etc that can be used to heal your character.

The bosses were an interesting combination of using either a puzzle to kill the boss quickly, or you could avoid the puzzle and slow them down with the standard hit and run which I thought was interesting, as usually in games it’s one or the other is, you usually do. don’t have a choice. There’s another interesting aspect to the boss fights that significantly reduces their frustration (which I won’t spoil here) but just know that it’s an interesting and welcome feature.

The levels weren’t too long where you’d get bored because you’d have to redo them often when you died (and you’d die quite a bit), but they were long enough to provide a good challenge. I will say that some of the early levels seemed very repetitive in terms of atmosphere and objectives, but the game wasn’t boring even in those levels.

The level system was pretty standard for an RPG, although some of the terminologies confused me at times about what essence is versus health and energy, that’s just a personal quirk. , I’d highly recommend this game.
