Time Break Chronicles is an old-school rogue-lite JRPG-inspired game. Its basic format is similar in nature to other rogue-lites, where you choose which way of nodes to go, where they can have a combination of battles / random events/bosses at the end of one section.
One of the special nodes you can get is the Distress Tokens, which give you the chance to save another hero to add to your character pool which you can take with you for every run. Well, when you start the run, you need to bring the main hero (Claire) and 5 other heroes. You can bring a few backups as well, depending on the specific meta expansion if you are advancing in the game. Interestingly, you can also get additional reinforcements as you run.
The gameplay:
Time Break Chronicles is a rogue-lite that harkens back to the classic JRPGs of old like Final Fantasy strategies. The premise is pretty simple, you put together a bumbling bunch of top characters and travel through space and time while fighting hordes of enemies. What Time Break Chronicles does well and is a big selling point in an assortment of characters that throws you in to stay in your party.
Aside from your character, you have a wrestler, a monk, a mutant, lizardmen, plague doctors, and more. I’m really happy to say that all of these characters have their own personalities and different move sets that they don’t feel the same. All of these characters bring their own dynamic to the party and it’s a lot of fun to keep up and see which party suits you best.
Battles are turn-based where you use your party’s abilities to make it as far as you can. Where the game falters though are the enemies. I encountered the same generic enemies I’ve seen across other JRPGs, witches, blobs, monsters, and that sort of thing. In a game with so much character in its heroes, the enemies really lack little.
The battles
The battles also drag on for quite some time and there are times when despite a strong faction, the enemies are next to impossible to defeat. The game wants to favor some sort of team building in certain battles which becomes a problem as you progress through. It feels like instead of rewarding your build, the game is doing everything you can to punish what you did.
The tutorial is also a little lacking too serving up the basics you already know but not delving into deeper mechanics. There were also frequent crashes in my already low playtime and the game shows its very early access scratches. Overall, the game has incredible promise and the amount of characters at your disposal gives plenty of room for experimentation but the game needs to be stretched a bit from its current state.
Visuals
Like the gameplay, the visuals just hit you because of the main characters. They are different and their sprites are unique. Aside from that, the game did it for me visually. There are a lot of visual encounters in each battle and that turned me off the game pretty quickly. It quickly descends into a mish-mosh of unattractive colors with walls of text here and there. While it may work for some, for me, the graphics of Time Break Chronicles could use a major overhaul.
Sound
Contrary to the visuals, the sound design of Time Break Chronicles is excellent. The soundtrack is the perfect blend of what you would want to hear in a game of this nature and while it won’t be remembered as a permanent classic, it does its job more than sufficiently.
Overall:
I wish there was a rating next to just Recommended or Not. The game has incredible promise and the polish needed through its initial access phase can shape it into what it needs. But as it stands, there are too many issues with the game to make a wholehearted recommendation. Still, if you can look past the troubling issues, and there are many of them, there is a good game to be played here. This review is brought to you by Steady Giveaways.
