The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is an action game released as a companion to the movie of the same name. This takes place in a separate story outside of the events of the film where Spider-Man discovers a major threat to NYC that has turned the underworld upside down, bringing together villains from the film and classic Marvel characters. The game begins with Spider-Man searching for his uncle Ben’s killer to bring him to justice. However, he soon discovers that there is a lot going on in Manhattan and finds himself in a tangled web between Oscorp, Wilson Fisk, and a mysterious new killer.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 seems to be under the motto “We don’t have time!” during production. You can tell from start to finish that the game really wanted to be a weak Arkham clone. At least I think it’s good that the old web swap mechanic from the console version of Spider-Man 2 is back. It’s more fun than anchoring webs in the blue sky over the city, which is completely unrealistic (yes, I know: you have to be careful with the word when it comes to a spiderman). Technically, however, the game is otherwise a mediocre disaster.

Story

The story follows a simple theme of Spidey trying to find the criminal Dennis Carradine. Resuming his search, he follows him but something stops him in his tracks. After this point, it’s just a big game filled with lots of bosses that Peter has to stop. It seems like the story is taking something behind the game and the idea is to put as many villains in the game as possible, something I couldn’t really complain about because I love Spider-Man and I saw all the boss fights are really happy.

Gameplay

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was released at the same time as Sony Films. While it feels rushed in some places, the game still holds up as a perfectly acceptable web experience. The game can be divided into three main parts: Traversal, Combat, and Peter Parker parts. In movement run, jump, and most importantly swing with the left and right buttons to control the respective arm. Web swinging is great, it feels so natural and incredibly freeing in a way I’ve never seen before in a video game.

The combat is very repetitive but that doesn’t mean it’s bad, it’s similar to Batman: Arkham Asylum or Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor with a series of button presses. It’s fluid and feels good to hold a high bar without hitting.

Finally, there are the Peter Parker episodes. These are the bits where the game slows down and you’re given the chance to do some minor investigative work as a mild-mannered teenager. It offers an interesting change of pace that allows you to catch your breath and really see the difference between the two alter egos. Apart from all these, there are many abilities that really help you feel like Spider-Man.

Graphics

The graphics are excellent for their time and they do everything to show you everything you need to see. The action is easy to follow and no matter what Spidey costume you get, it always looks cool and stylish. One thing I really liked, gameplay related, is that the webbing should now attach to the building above you, as opposed to the clouds.

Along with the morality system, which forces you to perform “small” acts of heroism while following the main story, to avoid being hunted down by the law as a warning, you also make for an interesting premise. . Unfortunately, however, it is increasingly used to extend the playing time from twelve to 14 hours – also because the two tasks and their solution show little difference in the meantime. Even within the campaign you get stuck and end up relying on an inappropriate boss marathon.

However, Spider-Man still has the biggest in the battle system department. Although it is based on the last Batman games, it does not reach their depth and intensity. The ranking is correct, but to achieve the class that Spidey achieved in the last (!) console generation, Bannox turned very little on the defining point.

It’s important to note that even though these games were released alongside the Amazing Spider-Man movies, these games are in no way direct adaptations of them. So the game closely follows the main plot of the movie but adds a ton of new characters with comic lines and sketches that weren’t even mentioned in the movie.

The story is very basic, but it will include characters like Kingpin and Kraven, who are major villains from the comics, as the main part. It focuses heavily on the crime-solving part of being Spider-Man and of course catching the bad guys. However, most of the great characters available don’t get the recognition they deserve, and are simply relegated to the game.
