You play as The Unknown, a half-demon half-human who was imprisoned by the Red Judge, the ruler of hell and the one who stole his voice. You return to hell to kill enemies (demonic and angelic), kill the Red Judge, and get your voice back, with the help of a talking skull, as well as a cutscene narrator and the weapon used in-game, called Paz. That’s the story for you, in a nutshell, it’s not the best out there, but it helps keep players engaged. You can find out more about the story and legend in the Codex.
You have to sync your shots, quick reloads (pressing the reload button as soon as the red beat goes inside the reticle) and dashes to the beat of the music, and the rhythm detection reticle, which acts as a guide to help you to match your actions. The game calls it “Beat Matching”. It sounds complicated but it becomes pretty easy once you get the hang of it. If the enemy is severely wounded, you can perform a kill (on beat as the rest), similar to DOOM’s glory kills, and you can also gain some health from it.
The game has a Fury multiplier, and it moves up and down depending on your beat synchronization; the more you match the rhythm, the more dynamic the music will be, which, in turn, will increase the multiplication (from 1x to 16x at maximum) as well as a snowflake. However, going off beat or taking damage will interfere with the multiplier and reduce it.
The final score at the end of each level is compiled from killing demons, destroying items, damage taken, total headshots, multi-kills, hit streak (total on-beat hits without going off-beat), time spent on level, time spent on 16x fury and kills on the beat. You can kill enemies and perform any action without being in sync, but you won’t get many points for it.
There are a variety of challenging enemies, such as gun-wielding demons (sometimes carrying a shield as well), fast stalkers that can teleport to your location, strong behemoths that can remove half your health if you’re not careful, with Seraphs that can light you up from afar. You will always be outnumbered, so keep moving, shooting, and running.
The soundtrack is amazing, definitely a 10/10 in my book. It features many metal bands and artists, such as Matt Heafy (Trivium), Alissa White-Gluz (Arch Enemy), Randy Blythe (Lamb of God), Tatiana Shmayluk (Ginjer), and many more. The music starts to light up when you start the level, keep killing enemies on the beat and it will be very intense. They’ve done a fantastic job of blending music and FPS elements, making it seem like the weapons are instruments and part of the song.
Graphics & Level Design:
This game looks great. Thankfully, you don’t need a heavy graphics card to play the game, even at higher levels. There are 8 Hells (levels) and they look somewhat similar but have different skyboxes or weather. They are very linear so are useless for hunting, and each one takes about 10-15 minutes to complete, depending on how quickly you can kill.
Overall the game is a big step up from BPM in many areas. Many problems in BPM are solved here but there are also many good things from BPM that are missing.
At the end of the day, they are two separate games that are both worth playing. The game has 8 levels, aside from the tutorial, and it took me 5 hours to complete all the levels and their challenges.
This is another fantastic rhythm FPS game with fun combat, a fantastic soundtrack, and great graphics. Having said that, the boss design is bland and the story is mediocre. In addition to the custom music modding support they will add later, I hope they release more levels in the future, and new songs to jam to while slaying demons.
