Originally released in December 2002, this is a visual novel with a fighting game in a mini-game. It wasn’t long before BlazBlue introduced this idea to the mainstream. The story of the game is a continuation of Tsukihime and is (surprisingly), canon and explains how the dead characters came back to life to fight the small list.

MeltyBlood combines 2D combat gameplay with player choices and branching story progression characteristic of visual novels: Depending on the outcome of the battles, the story will progress in different directions. Six characters are available to the player from the start, while the other eight must be unlocked by playing through the story mode (in the patched version, all characters are playable from the start).

The fighting game features traditional moves, special attacks, and canceling combos. By building up power, players can unleash devastating blows called “EX Attacks”. Similarly, “EX Shield” will greatly increase the character’s defense. Save options are available for additional tactical decisions during battles.
