Hindsight game is brilliant. It speaks to generational trauma. It is about death, loss, and coping. What it’s supposed to do, which is emotional engagement. Most games are physically immersive, where you perform actions as an extension of yourself, but this game creates engagement by integrating your actions and emotions into the protagonist’s role.

It does what it’s supposed to do, which is evoke emotion through connection, without a lot of mechanics. I’m all for pushing the envelope, but at the end of the day, game devs are storytellers and we can achieve a level of immersion that film and TV can’t because we put the user in the action. And we can do it without needing to create new mechanics.

This is an interactive narrative: a game that speaks to the player’s soul by moving it through the mind of a protagonist exploring their thoughts.

I really like this type of game (narrative-heavy with minimal gameplay) and this is a pleasantly unique game among all the others. You’re given the ability to see the protagonist’s thoughts in any way your heart desires, and the game is very clear that we see our thoughts differently over time. Time, and memory, are poetic elements in this play.

Much of the narrative is conveyed visually through hearing (words and music) which helps make sense of what you are seeing. I found myself deeply moved throughout the story as many of the characters’ thoughts are given context.

The story may be another part of why I was so moved as it deals with how one deals with grief, the parts of life we ​​all deal with eventually but would rather do without of itself. Because of this, I saw more of myself in the main character. As the story slipped towards the end I couldn’t help but cry, not that the game is sad, more that it is just deeply human. It’s a really beautiful story.

I would recommend this, especially if you’re looking for a 2-ish hour-long story that’s more intimate than a movie. This story is definitely worth your time.
