Chaos Galaxy 2 played my favorite villains to galactic conquest, all hala our Shogun Bontenmaru! in the first game, Chaos Galaxy 2 brings a lot of differences to the game that make it feel like a new, yet unique, very much an expansion.
A lot of the tricks you use/learn in these types of games like Fire Emblem or Super Robot Wars is that you can still bait the enemy, but now with all the leaders having special ships, mechs, or titans as their individual skills you should so get a lot smarter about your methods. To add to it, some ships have different weapon loading options, which also crushes the table and really presents a challenge.
The plot of the game is pretty straightforward but pretty good. Experiencing Chaos Galaxy 1 really hit a few points for me, especially learning what happened to some of the bosses and leaders.
Some died, and others joined their comrades in another group, the story was complex but detailed and you feel the feeling that something is happening. Characters will talk and joke with each other, sometimes while approaching ships commanded by someone they have a crush on.
It’s a nice expansion from Chaos Galaxy 1 and makes the game feel more alive, and you’ll sometimes see characters interacting together, figures having meetings and conversations about politics, and just providing something to enjoy as the game progresses.
Each group has strengths and weaknesses. If you don’t have the glowing screens you’ve made showing units and weapons flying by (personally something I’m missing in Chaos Galaxy 1) a chess board-style battle plays out for you to have a sense of general how well you are actually doing. The key point is the first one I mentioned, STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS.
This game, these styles of games, it’s all about knowing what can counter or what works against X. It doesn’t take much to figure out how to use and out-think AI, but you can’t just rush in blindly either in the hope of victory. BTW for anyone saying “the aliens are the way to strong” I took out one of their fleets with 2 fleets of 6k each, and didn’t lose a single ship through the tactics which I learned in Chaos Galaxy 1.
I certainly wouldn’t play them in your early games because they’re a great challenge, but like any force nothing in a game is invincible, it just needs to go -thoughtful moves and knowing the best ship configurations (BTW highly recommend 1 skill support per ships, some units burn energy like nothing and leave you vulnerable the next attack if the ships you without bullets…)
While ship combat seems to haven’t changed much, what’s new is the planet-building system. A simple but fun way to give more than just clicking buttons. All in all, decent looking but still a bit sad with the animations, but then that’s just my quirk. To play and enjoy this game requires a slow pace, it’s more of a relaxing game and doesn’t be slow. You have a redo button if the battle goes terribly and you can always back out if you don’t think you can win the battle.
Overall the game is great, the author has delivered a game that impresses and delivered on what he showed during development, with a roadmap that only promises to add more. It isn’t the greatest game out there, but if you love Fire Emblem and Super Robot Wars, strategy games where you don’t just throw stuff at the enemy and hope it dies, this game is worth picking up.
