In Zafehouse Diaries, the player leads a group of survivors in a remote and abandoned town to avoid starvation, relationship conflicts, and the imminent threat of zombies.

Zafehouse: Diaries is a unique take on the survival/strategy genre. There are 3 different modes with different difficulties, which ultimately have the same goal, survival. Cities, events, objects, and people are all rendered accurately. You can customize your survivor story and background, which will then be randomly generated from a pool.

You interact with a diary that shows all the events that happen every hour. When I first played the game, I was a bit annoyed by the fact that you interact with a diary. However, once I played, I completely understood why the interface is the way it is and it is surprisingly informative. You can assign tasks to each rescue that they will try to do to the best of their ability, depending on what they are good at (ie cleaning, barricading, cooking, etc.).

The game has a lot of depth to it and some deep mechanics. A good example is that it might be wise to have one of your survivors scout the motel a few doors down to see if there are any zombies so your group has a nice place to rest. Or maybe that walk-in hospital has that much-needed band-aid.

Surviving:

Each new game creates a new environment of a city consisting of many houses and special places. It is the player’s task to guide this team of survivors to explore new locations for the purposes of finding food and items, exchanging equipment, and setting up defenses against zombies. Each house or special location (eg police station, hospital, etc.), will require an investigation, and if the player wants to, attack or break, killing zombies on the way. However, without the appropriate weapons, ammunition, tools, and skills, such an attempt would guarantee a quick and certain death.

If successful, a new location may be searched to reveal items and other important features. Any area can be protected by placing barricades and traps. However, many activities, depending on the sound of the objects used to perform these tasks, may attract unwanted attention. Especially at night, when zombies are most active with low visibility.

Survivors

The player may lead a team of five survivors. Each survivor has a specific profession (eg firefighter, surgeon, etc.), with different social and physical characteristics. Additionally, relationships between survivors are a factor in cooperation. Some survivors may like or dislike other members for a number of different reasons (race, sex, sexuality, or social status) and as the game progresses, depending on the player’s actions (e.g. spreading rumors), this may change. relationships become stronger or weaker.

• Lack of in-game options to change sound levels
• Negative relationships sometimes feel over-the-top

Overall, this game has pros and cons in terms of gameplay and survival. If I were to rate this game, I would rate it 7/10 because of the interesting and potential factors. However, success in each game is heavily weighted on RNG.
