Udongein X is a Megaman X-inspired 2D action platform. As Touhou Fangame, there are many built-in heel elements, especially at high levels of difficulty.
The movement is very similar to the Megaman X games, with a combined sense of dash, jump, wall kick, and movement. However, there is no sliding. The movement is precise, which is important because of the heavy projectile owners. There are only a few unusual movements, and I may be unfamiliar with Megaman X-style games (I only played the classic series as a kid). Need to get a dash jump from a wall kick in an optional area which was intuitive to me.
Pros:
- Beautiful pixel art
- Great arrangement of Toho music in the vein of Megaman X.
- Fun gameplay.
- Jumping feels like playing Mega Man X.
- They turned the “Valley Castle” section into a ton of fun. This is where the game shines the most.
- Interesting owners and samples.
- Unlimited life
Cons:
- No weak weapon. There seems to be a weapon of boss/weakness, but there is none. When fighting with bosses, you can guess what time they will give.
- Lots of reusable enemies in the main stages
- Surface design is often lacking. Seja’s stage has a neat trick, but most of the levels are quite simple in design.
A challenging take on the Megaman X-style game, and it deserves all the praise. I liked the overall feel of the bass pattern and the game with nervous control and fair balance. The steps may seem short, but they are also pleasant.
There are multiple levels of difficulty, an easy challenge for users of other 2D action platforms. It’s normal for Touhou veterans, and there are lunatics for the brave enough. It doesn’t change much (or anything) for normal difficult stages, but boss attacks do change a lot. Bullet density increases dramatically, and some attacks intensify. Owners will practice a lot to overcome the high difficulty.
Conclusion
Overall, this is a great game if you like retro-style 2D action platforms. The price is low and you get a fair amount of gameplay. I loved playing it from beginning to end. The presentation and gameplay were fun and exciting. However, some things in the game make it feel incomplete/hasty.
