The Legend of Heroes: Kuro no Kiseki has great gameplay in the series- it’s an overall better experience than the cold metal series modes, having a more mature character helps, and the new combat system (although not perfect) is excellent and it does that the game is so much fun! The story is fantastic, the characters are interesting, a great start to a new series!
Story
Calvard In Edith’s town, a young man known as Van Arkride works as a Spriggan in his Arkride Solution Office, which is a cross between a bounty hunter and a detective. One day, Van is approached by Agnes Claudel, a high school student. That makes him, and the actor, confront the dark side of the Republic; assassinations, mafias, corruption, extraordinary experiments, and nationwide threats.
The characters
Van is easily a fresh and smart move as an MC in the series right now, and I really like the main cast as a whole. This story really shows all the “darker tunes” in mainstream musicians. They are not allies of justice, but they can cooperate with them on reasonable terms depending on goal alignment. I wasn’t sure what to think of the returning cameo characters, but I ended up really liking them as well because they’re not the spotlight stuff in this story.
Locations & Music
Calvard is actually a really interesting place, one place, in particular, is probably my favorite part of town on the whole list. Music is one of the best mediums games have to offer.
The gameplay
The gameplay is also different. Combat starts in Ys-style action combat, and you press the button to switch to turn-based. Aside from the boss fights, you can switch between turn-based and action whenever you want. The point is to speed up the game a bit. You are recommended to use action combat for smaller enemies, and turn-based for bigger/tougher enemies and bosses. The new ornament system feels like a slight reduction from what we had in Cold Steel/Hajimari, but everything else is an improvement so it’s not a big deal.
Overall, another solid game (from what I played). Of course, my review or any other doesn’t matter because if you’ve made it this far in the series, you’re probably going to play this regardless.
