Starship Troopers: Terran Command

The game plays like a simplified version of Company of Heroes and that is mostly a good thing. I didn’t want a horribly involved strategy game set in a Starship Troopers bizarro nationalist fascist bug stomping world, I’m here to hold shaky armor against insurmountable odds, watch the bugs melt, feel the soldiers of mine of the can make fun of bad one-liners before being ripped in half, etc. Terran Command is giving in this direction!
Combat is somewhat reinforced through a kind of rock, paper, scissors dynamic where certain types of units are clearly required to deal with certain bugs but are rudimentary compared to their contemporaries. While units have their own variety of abilities this again tends to be straightforward lacking the nuance found in other modern strategy games. It’s all very perfunctory but it works for me in the setting and watching a wave of insects crash into the sandbar of your defense feels good.
This campaign is basically the only one available at the time of writing but it is decently long and the story is ok with a small amount of dark humor to be found. I actually loved a few animated cutscenes and you can see the love of the source material. I really hope for a map editor and horde mode in the future. If you are a fan of Starship Troopers and strategy games I think you will enjoy this but if you are looking for something that will really make you flex your strategy muscle look elsewhere.
