Star Wars: Empire at War and its expansion Forces of Corruption (included in the Gold Pack) is a must-buy for the Star Wars fan looking for an RTS worth sinking some hours into. I may not have hours on my Steam copy, but I assure you I played this constantly on my old PC back when it came out. You could say it was my childhood pc game.

In this game, you can play the story campaign of all 3 factions: Empire, Rebellion, and Zann Consortium. The Empire and Rebellion take place before and during A New Hope. (You must run the Empire at War Gold Edtion game to play this) The Consortium campaign takes place after this. (You have to run a Forces of Corruption game to play this) I’m putting this back as it’s a bit obvious to new players.

Story:

The story of the Star Wars Empire at war follows the story leading up to Star Wars A New Hope and ends roughly after it. There’s no reference to Rogue One, of course, because this was before the days Disney erased Kyle Katarn from the galaxy’s existence. (Never before has that generalization been so relevant and not a generalization).

I personally found the story of the Force of Corruption very engaging and interesting… but that may be due to the vast collection of Expanded Universe lore. …Guys guys guys, Admiral Thrawn is in this game, you don’t even know! (*mumbles* …Unless you watch Star Wars Rebels where he thankfully made a re-return to the franchise, but I mean, it’s still cool)

Gameplay:

The gameplay of Star Wars Empire in battle, in general, is very much an “RTS”, you have your galactic vision where you build ships, space stations, troops, buildings, fortifications, fortifications, factories, and more. You have to build some structures to develop troops. There’s also a science system. The government creates its own technology, while the rebels steal the technology.

The importance of technology should become very clear immediately. You start with the Z95 headhunters, which are then quickly replaced by X-Wings. For those who don’t know, the Z95 is basically a garbage ship if unmodified (I’d better include that before someone mentions the modded Z95 Bounty spy ship), I’ll blow them on the X-Wing alliance for sports. Flight the Z95s vs a YT 2000, HA! A child’s play. ( …Sorry this review isn’t helping anyone, is it? Watch the video instead, links below. )

There are a lot of cool features in the game, and the RTS is really fun… …but only for about 3 or 4 hours in. That’s when I lost interest in leading any of my wars because by then I had fought maybe 4 space wars and 4 ground wars.
If you plan to lead every battle and try to avoid taking excessive excuses, you will have long slow battles. And I wasn’t offered an RTS anyway.

To sandwich that into something cool though, the fighting on each planet is really fun, because the developers have obviously done their research on the type of planet you’re fighting on. On Geonosis you see the same traditional population and landscape that you see in Star Wars 2. on Tatooine you see the Desert and the various locals. Some planets sympathize with one group over another and help them in defense or victory.

Pros:

• The game is fun and has plenty of modes to try.
• The modding community is amazing.
• Definitely worth the money, with the free “Power of Corruption” Expansion.
• 3 sessions to try and play with.
• Real ships and vehicles from the movies (Including a couple that isn’t).
• Balance is good, depends on how you look at it though.
• A map with which you can replay your favorite battles.
• You can build a Death Star. ‘Nuff you said.

Cons:

• The gameplay is very balanced.
• The units are very limited.
• Ground Battles aren’t exactly bad, but they’re also great.

Conclusion:

This review kind of derailed a few times, all you have to take away from it is this: I enjoyed it as a Star Wars fan. I don’t think it stands up as well as an RTS. It lacks modern optimization and resolution values (It doesn’t have 1920×1080, there are tricks to cheat the game if you feel like modding).

Overall I enjoyed Star Wars: Empire at War, I especially enjoyed Forces of Corruption. I suggest you give this a shot, Star Wars works with any game Genre.
