About This Game:

I am an expert in gaming, I have a lot of experience in PC Gaming since 1996 so I can write better reviews than anyone. Today we will talk about Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine Video Game.

Doctor Jones! Doctor Jones! That’s right game fans, everyone’s favorite whip-cracking, snake-hating, archeologist is back. With moves that would impress Lara Croft herself, Indy is back with a whole new bag and those darn Reds better be on the lookout. The fate of the world hangs in the balance and with the secret of the tower of Babylon threatening to rear its ugly head, there’s just nothing that’s gonna stop the adventurous kid named after the family dog.

The year is 1947 and the cold hand of Nazi power in Germany has been crushed by the Allies; the world is relatively at peace. At peace, that is, except for the heating up of political differences between Russia and the United States.

Taking a break from his travels and archeological misadventures, Indy is finally getting what seems like a much-needed rest from the hectic overseas hunts, and doing some good old-fashioned digging in the American Southwest. During his long monotonous day sifting through the dirt and trying to unearth something interesting, he comes upon a strange piece of what looks to be something mechanical.

Since Tomb Raider is the game I’m most familiar with in this genre, and the fact that it started the trend for these types of games, that’s what I’ll compare some of the features in Indiana Jones: The Infernal Machine to. It just seems as though most of the actions in the game are much slower. Camera angles in Indy are very well controlled.

He doesn’t disappear when you are standing next to a wall and you can use the keyboard to get a first-person perspective on the situation. You can only see the exact ways that a person’s head can bend, but it’s better than the constant behind-the-back view that tends to get tedious to one’s eyes after hours and hours of playing.

Weapons:

Your weapons in the game include fists, your whip, Indy’s classic .45-caliber revolver (with unlimited ammo might I add), an automatic and a machine gun, a sniper rifle, a machete for down-and-dirty hacking and slashing, a choice shotgun, and on the explosive end of the spectrum a bazooka, satchel charges and hand grenades. A wide variety compared to most games and definitely well-balanced for some of the missions you enter.

Graphics

As I stated earlier the graphics in the game are quite good and some of the best 3D I’ve seen done for this type of game yet. The cutscenes also complement the already beautiful and scenic areas in which the gameplay takes place.

From the very first level, it really looks as though you could be in the canyons of the American Southwest. There was not really that much wrong with shapes and such overall, except that the characters in the game were a tad bit blocky. Another thing that I’ll touch on is the animation: it is very smooth. When you are making Indy run or walk, or whatever you are making Indy do, his actions are almost seamless.

Sound:

There really isn’t much I can comment on about the sound in the game. Take the classic John Williams soundtrack from the movies, some slightly bad dubbing of what seems like Harrison Ford’s voice imitated by a gentleman named Doug Lee, and some fairly decent environmental sounds and sound effects (i.e. gunshots, canyon echoes, etc…) and you end up with a pretty solid soundtrack to your run and jump adventure. Nothing Academy Award-winning, but certainly not the same old boring run-of-the-mill stuff.

Overall:

Overall the game was definitely worth the play. Indiana Jones fans should definitely put this on their must-have list. Even though the game has been out a while it isn’t already ancient history and can be looked at rather than being avoided like the plague because it’s not the newest thing to come down the road. There weren’t any problems that I could find during playing as far as technical problems so I’m assuming most folks will be fine with it.

Throughout the game, you can search for more treasure which ups your Indy Quotient and your overall score, as well as have fun blasting away at those fearsome baddies that get in your way. You can spend whatever loot you come across on snakebite kits or ammunition at a shop in between missions. Other than the lack of speed involved in the game it’s a decent product but nothing overly special. There was a time when Lucasarts was basically of the level that they took what was good out there in the gaming world and refined it.

While this is true for most of the other games they’ve released, Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine is nothing more than something to hold gamers’ attention spans in between your fixes of Tomb Raider and awaiting the next Indy movie to be released.
