Hello NeighborVideo Game was a roller coaster of emotions, I’m not sure how to feel about the quality of the game. As bad as the reviews are, I will only give a lengthy overview of how I felt throughout the game and explain some of the aspects that I can do.
For a new player, the story is very difficult to understand or what is really happening in the game when going through it. There is no in-depth description of what is happening around you, no narrator or dialogue is telling you what is happening and why. The only real story you get is cut scenes and even short and hard to understand. However, when you dig deeper and spend some time in the story, it’s a little easier to understand.
In my opinion, the story leaves a lot of mysteries that are fun to experiment with and create ideas around, both good and bad. This is a good thing because it gives the player/community a huge brainstorming session about what is happening. This is bad though because not everyone invests so much in the story and how the information is presented can be difficult to understand. Overall I would say that the story is interesting, but it is not necessary to enjoy the game to the fullest.
- Very interesting story
- Good gameplay mechanics
- Lots of physics and agility puzzles
- To find more than one home
- Replay costs too much.
- The graphics look great.
- This is a small game because it took me 4.6 hours to beat
- Neighbor’s pathfinding is highly anticipated.
- 30 for a game with 4-5 hours of play value.
- Too many bugs.
- Physics is very fast.
In terms of gameplay, Hello Neighbor is very simple. You have a goal at the beginning of an act and you only have to find a way to reach it. However, it is much more difficult to reach. Throughout the game, the playing field is very wide and can get very fast. A lot of things are introduced with very little explanation and you need to solve puzzles to get to specific places in the house.
It would not be so bad if there were some hints or instructions. The game expects you to solve many different situations and puzzles with very little information, which can quickly overwhelm new players, especially with how many different mechanics are shown and so little. How many players are thrown in time? An example of this, a small disturbing warning, would be that random painting in a room without any indication that it is a switch actually opens up a new area. I tried to look around the house to see if there was anything that was at least pointing to this painting but to no avail, it just exists and the player needs to get over it.
Solving puzzles is fun and satisfying, but reading a walkthrough to solve a puzzle by accident or to feel a painting hanging somewhere in between was actually a switch and the game never told you that or found you. No way to do that. This happens a lot, with the fact that many puzzles can be ruined just by playing the box stacking simulator and building stairs. All this needs to be done when the neighbor is chasing you and hunting you down. Now the neighboring part of the game was not so bad.
The Neighbor will find a shortcut and catch you.
Its A.I sometimes questionable, randomly acquiring X-ray vision capability and seeing me doing crappy movements in a 3-story bathroom above it is sometimes frustrating, but otherwise works fine. Feel we have ‘Run out of gas’ emotionally in the daytime, but it also feels like the neighbor is raising his eyes to the back of his head as his ability to see you during the day increases. Come at night I think the game is really fair, it responds to noise and does not find you in areas where you are clearly hiding.
The beauty of this game is that A.I learn from your experiences with you. Whenever he catches you or you run away, he will set traps or cameras in your areas of conflict and force you to adapt and control. However, if you get caught too many times or run too many times, it somehow gets out of hand. I had 18 cameras in one room at a time and had a bear trap covering almost every door and window.
If it can be improved and balanced, I think it will be a lot more fun to play against than a trap-setting simulator. Fortunately, there is a friendly mode of disabling traps for those who not only want stealth but it also slows down the neighbor, unnecessarily reducing the difficulty if you just use it with spamming traps and cameras. Want to stop I’ll just summarize everything to avoid this Great Wall of China-sized text wall.
