Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is dreadful. I don’t mean it’s a failed attempt as a game, and I don’t mean scary as you might think. (The game is brilliant and he does what he has to do in a wonderful way.) By now I have reached the bucket. There are parts of the game that I absolutely hate. Below is a personal perspective on this whole thing. And personally, I mean, I think about my life.
“It’s harder than starting again.” While playing this game you will definitely understand the meaning of this quote. In Getting Over It you play as a boy in the pot. Your goal is to reach the top of the mountain and for this, you are given only one hammer which is controlled by the movement of your mouse. There are different ways to use your hammer to overcome different obstacles, the game never really tells you how to approach things. It throws you to the foot of the mountain and from there you are yourself.
The game can be played with one hand (a blink of an eye). You control a man’s sled hammer with your mouse, no need to click. One can perform a variety of skillful movements with one’s hammer, such as launching or pulling oneself. However, reckless behavior will always be punished by the game. Almost every obstacle can be overcome just by being careful. Anger is punished, the game punishes you for going crazy over it instead of overcoming it.
I went crazy on the stairs. Parasols, racks, and slides before that, but Bennett encouraged me to take a break at the start of the game. So I did. Crossing the stairs was the hardest part, at least for me, while the scary bucket and the snake were easy for me. In Bennett’s own words, I conquered it. I conquered games, trees, stairs and furniture, and buckets.
Passing is a game to test your patience, determination, and ability to handle failures like no other. The game is designed in such a way that, at almost any turn, there is a risk of falling behind and losing a lot of progress. Reaching a certain point after working for hours and losing it all by mistake can be heartbreaking. However, you will find that once you know how to reach an obstacle, the parts that previously seemed impossible become almost insignificant.
Although some people hate the idea of not guaranteeing progress, these are exactly the moments of frustration that make you feel successful when you fall down, once you reach the top of the mountain, just as great. This game is a life lesson in the form of a game on how to deal with failures and I really appreciate the idea and concept behind it.
