Galaxy Squad is a turn-based strategy game, where you will make your way through the galaxy. Recruit new squad members, take on bosses and alien enemies, craft and upgrade implants, weapons, and armor.

When choosing a new game, you can only choose to play the Story Campaign and other modes of the game that you will need to unlock before playing. After choosing the story campaign, you will be able to choose the options for your game. Next is to choose and arrange three characters, you can choose which group of characters you want in your starting team. You can also choose the look, color, and costumes of these characters.

You have a choice of three types of spaceships, they are Battleship, Crafting, and Explorer ships. There are also three currently locked ships, Drone Equipped, Transport, and Tech-Research ships. The goal of the game is to reach the far side of the galaxy and deliver a mystery package while staying ahead of pursuing corporate ships. As you progress through the campaign, you’ll have a few options as you reach certain points.

This will result in different results as you progress to the far side of the galaxy. Between you and the far side are randomly scattered nodes. From your starting point, you will need to move between nodes edging forward to your goal.

You will notice that some of these nodes are connected by a red line to the far side of the galaxy. This is a campaign and you will have to visit each one and complete the objective of these nodes before the next one opens up.

When you visit a node, it will show you which other nodes are connected to that one, you can just move between the connected nodes. Nodes are indicated as a blue circle surrounding a green, yellow, or red internal light.

Choosing to go to a node might trigger a random event when you get to it, like being attacked by pirates or finding a cave system on asteroids. Depending on the event you triggered it will depend on what happens next such as finding a cave system on an asteroid that will allow you to rest and search the caves or move on to another node.

In some nodes, you may find some items that are useful to you like, fuel or money but you may also find some items that will take away some of your resources or even destroy your ship in the sky.

Conclusion

The strength of Galaxy Squad is that it does a good job of blending several proven elements together into a simple popcorn game with a very strong visual style. It lacks any and all restraint. It’s kind of an FTL clone game, but in gameplay style, it’s more like the Infinite Space games.

It’s more relaxed, and there’s more to see than in FTL. Something like FTL is painful. It doesn’t really need to be loved. It doesn’t draw you in with good looks, and it punishes you relentlessly for sliding up or even daring to play it at all.

Galaxy Squad wasn’t like that at all. It’s nice and fun, and that’s okay. For the sale price, you get far more than you deserve. At regular price… maybe think about it. It’s probably not the price of a sandwich, but I’m willing to bet you had take-out for dinner that cost more. So would you skip pizza for a day if it meant satisfying your curiosity when it came to one of those potentially lovable-but-junky one-man projects?
