Crysis Remastered is apparently the exact same game as the original in terms of gameplay, only with updated graphics. Some people even think the graphics look awful, so I guess it will be up to individual players to decide if they are or not.
As for me, I never played the original, but I did see parts of it on the PS3, but that was a long time ago and my memory is very blurry. Still, I really enjoyed spending my time and trying to work through some of the different aspects of the situation with different layouts, and overall, I thought the scenes didn’t look that bad either. Some of the artwork was kind of iffy, but it certainly didn’t interfere with the gameplay itself.
Let me just open up by saying that I rarely play first-person shooter games and am terrible at reacting to things I don’t see on screen. But I’ve managed to find my way through almost the entire game so far on normal difficulty, which is 2/4 on the settings. I guess any harder I couldn’t be enjoying it, so I stuck with it.
Story:
Play as Nomad, who is part of a special ops team sent to evacuate a group of archaeologists who have made some ground-breaking discoveries. However, the North Korean military has taken control of the island and the game moves from fighting enemy soldiers to finding out that there is something much bigger and more dangerous on the island. Armed with a special nanosuit that can provide armor, and invisibility, as well as the ability to run fast and jump high, you will progress mission by mission and unravel the story as you play.
The gameplay:
The game is divided into 11 tasks, all covering the story from beginning to end. Individual missions are also further broken down into smaller objectives for you to pursue, along with some optional objectives that help make the story make a little more sense. Everything progresses in a linear fashion and the island, despite its size, breaks into smaller battlefields that don’t interact with each other. Enemies from one section don’t help those from another and this actually helped me get as far as I have–the 11th mission and having a bit of trouble making it all to the end.
The most enjoyable parts of the game for me involved trying to tackle different tasks and then going back to see if I could do them a little better using slightly different strategies and maybe even skipping areas others. With the ability to be invisible and run at high speeds, it’s not hard to dodge enemies and sneak up. Often though when I wanted to back out of those situations, it was a bit difficult, due to the risks that had previously not been completely eliminated.
Crysis Remastered has the best gameplay !!
It was also fun and a lot of fun to attach a shotgun scope to an assault rifle and try to take out enemies at great distances. Sometimes if I couldn’t get through a session I would do this and escape quite easily. The enemy AI has a field of view that isn’t too far away from what you can see and do with a sniper scope, so you can literally camp for hours from one spot and have enemies dance around until they finally take over enough shots and keel.
There was a lot of fun gameplay too inside the cars, as you can switch between seats 1 and 2 in most cars and then switch between driving and shooting. There is the possibility of flying one of the VTOL aircraft again but that is only for one part of the mission.
One mission was dedicated to driving and playing inside the tank as well. There’s a very good use of the different vehicles, although it would be nice to be able to explore a bit more freely and use all of the vehicles instead of being restricted strictly within those functions.
One part of the game pushed me to want to give up though, I won’t go into it too much, but when the game gets confusing and I can’t see very well up from the bottom, and from the right, I felt that the game just wasn’t much fun anymore. Now that I think about it, I know I really should avoid those full degrees of freedom games. At least the game made me realize it, and luckily it was still a linear progression through different sections and I ended up doing it in one piece, and still have the idea.
Controls
It works well with a keyboard + mouse as well as a controller. Since the game was originally optimized for PC and console, it would make sense that both would continue to be well supported. Controller vibration is set to be on and the game defaults to the controller when you have it plugged in, so mine almost jumps out of my desk.
Graphics
There are iffy graphics at times, but overall I thought they looked pretty nice. No real complaints from my end except that I caused the game to crash twice while playing and for seemingly no reason, plus some random screen shake just in case walking around, I assumed that the game was only loading post-test content. My system also far exceeds the minimum requirements, but I wouldn’t really try to run it with the minimum requirements. I cannot imagine the wait times and perhaps the grumbling that would ensue.
Music & Sounds
The music seemed pretty decent, although it was randomly cut at times, and I wasn’t sure why. The atmosphere during the game was very satisfying during the gunfight.
Conclusion
Crysis Remastered is a lot of fun, I’ve been enjoying it. Some parts are better than others, and as I’m reviewing the game now several days after release here on Steam, I can see that the reviews are pretty much split down the middle–49% is recommended.
Given that the game is similar to the original game and that the graphical updates may not be exactly what some people expected, in addition to the completely linear development of the game’s overall story, I’m kind of wondering how much replay value so many people can attach to this game. I think it’s going to be pretty low. The price is also a killer, especially for people who have a basic game and who can still run it.
But from the perspective of someone who is unfamiliar with even heavy FPS games and terrible at shooters, and who never played the first game, I was able to have a good, level of fun heavy enough for me. And I enjoyed some sections enough to go back and re-do some of the missions, thus I would still give this a positive recommendation.
