Crysis 2 is a first-person shooter developed by Crytek using Cry Engine 3. It serves as a sequel to the critically acclaimed 2007 game Crysis and is the first game in the franchise to be released on consoles as opposed to the first game this was a special PC.
The game puts the actor in the U.S. spotlight. A Marine named Alcatraz whose squad is sent to Manhattan to help in the rescue of civilians after a plague hits the city. Shortly after their arrival, an unknown enemy attacks their Submarine, thus forcing the group to swim to the surface only to be shot down by an Alien gunship.
Fortunately, Laurence “Prophet” Barnes, former leader of the Raptor Team (Crysis 1) and a known Nano-suit user, finds Alcatraz and gives him his (along with Nano’s) mission -suit), before shooting himself in the head. Alcatraz is currently facing a city on the verge of collapse due to the ongoing war between the US Military, Cell Paramilitary Forces, and an Alien race called Ceph.
Crysis 2 gameplay is divided into Exploration, Customization, and Combat.
Exploration is pretty linear as the levels aren’t very open. In particular, exploration will involve searching for ammo caches to resupply weapons or find better ones or reaching a previously scouted Tactical Point through a visor, which shows various tactical advantages beforehand of the big battle on the map.
The presence of collectibles is something that makes quests a little more useful for those interested in additional lore or completionists, but they add nothing practical to the game. Overall the quests in Crysis 2 are very limited and only a few areas open up slightly, but it’s still an important part of the game to find equipment or the right method of attack.
The customization goes two ways: first, all weapons can be customized with previously acquired add-ons, which means that to unlock more you have to punch them into enemy weapons.
These attachments can dramatically affect how a weapon works, providing more power, flexibility, or anything else you may need to approach a particular phase, including silencers, grenade launchers, and optical scopes. The second permutation deals with the suit, which has been upgraded with Nanotech found in the corpses of enemy casualties; the fact that a dropped Nano disappears over time encourages a more accurate, faster approach to alien combat. Suit upgrades upgrade stealth, armor, speed, and tracking abilities – the only upgrades that can apply to each power, and although some like Deflection is important, many of the features are gimmicky without really being worth the Nano’s asking price.
Combat is the true core of Crysis 2, and it plays realistically with a very satisfying feel to it, especially in regards to the impact hits, the gun feels and explosions / damage in the field, and tons of physics-based objects flying around, as of course enemy corpses, not as much as in Crysis 1 perhaps, but still noticeable.
The main feature of the combat here is that there are several ways to fight one: detach the heavy machine gun from the truck and use it to plow your way through enemies, or instead kill by hiding from a distance with a sniper rifle, or also avoiding combat altogether by finding a way, are all viable options.
The combat challenge, both on Hard and Posthuman is enormous, although once Deflection is turned on armor becomes heavier it will greatly reduce most enemy threats. Enemies usually hit pretty hard and using energy to your full potential, with an eye on energy consumption, will be critical to winning. Overall the combat in this game is very fun and satisfying, FPS fans will definitely love it, as I did.
Crysis 2 is overall a solid FPS with stunning visuals, satisfying combat, and enough variety to keep it entertaining until the end. It may have its drawbacks, but it’s still a game I’d totally recommend to any FPS / Sci-fi fan. Crysis 2, like its predecessor, has some of the most impressive graphical integrity of its time that still holds up even today as can be seen in its high-resolution textures, dynamic lighting, and beautifully designed settings and illustrations.
The game introduces new mechanics such as a new cover system, a Nano-suit upgrade system, expanded weapon selection, and mechanics for using the Nano-suit’s updated abilities. Despite the occasional bumpy but challenging AI, you will have an intense and action-packed experience.
