Crysis is perhaps one of the most visually stunning games released in the 2000s on PC. Crytek absolutely nailed it with world-class design and environmental breakthroughs. It was about two hours into Crysis when I first realized just how good it could be and that Crysis exceeded all of my expectations.

Crysis may not have been the best first-person-driven story according to critics and players however I loved the narrative, I always wondered what would happen next and where they would take the story. Crysis starts out as a Tactical-Stealth game and feels more like a Sci-Fi shooter in the back half of the game.

Story

A team of American archaeologists has discovered ancient fossil machinery on Linghsan Island. However, the North Koreans capture them shortly after discovery and cut off the islands and the rest of the world. You play as Nomad, a deployed Raptor Team member, who wears a high-tech Nanosuit, which grants him superhuman abilities, such as invisibility or strength. Your job is to move the archaeologists and find any valuable information. Once on the island, you find that one of the machines is still running and is not too happy about your presence, so it turns a minor squabble between Americans and Koreans into a giant slaughterhouse.

While the game’s plot is serviceable and somewhat interesting from the start, it doesn’t have any interesting characters. The North Korean bully is forgettable, and your fellow team members are no better, as there is no depth or proper character development. And that’s a shame as the game occasionally forces the Nomads to interact with them, yet I couldn’t care less about them at all. The good thing is that the story doesn’t pretend to be smarter than it really is, and it doesn’t distract you from playing. Its narrative only deals with a group of American soldiers fighting Koreans and Refugees, and that is sufficient for a game of this nature.

Gameplay:

To my surprise, I still thoroughly enjoyed the twelve-hour effort. The game has several levels, and many of them are very open-ended, allowing you to choose the path and style that suits you, because the game simply shows you your goal on the map. Sometimes there are side objectives, which can help you in your mission or give you additional information about the story.

You will pass through dense forests, beautiful cliffs, rocky mountains, dense forests, and many industrial areas, so the conditions are quite varied. That variety is one of the reasons I enjoyed playing the game again, as each mission is different and offers something new and unique. However, there is not much opportunity for sightseeing, as the Koreans have several military camps and outposts in the area, and can call in reinforcements.

You can use cars to get around these open areas. Many civilian vehicles are transported, as well as Humves, military trucks, and even tanks. You’re not limited to land vehicles, as you can use ships and even drive a VTOL for the same mission. All vehicles are controllable, and using them against your enemies is both useful and fun.

As mentioned earlier, he wears the advanced Nanosuit, which makes him more effective in battle. You have four Nanosuit styles to choose from: armor, which makes you more resistant to damage; invisibility due to stealth; the power to jump high, smash through walls, and lift and throw heavy objects; and the speed of your general movement and weapon handling. This energy draws energy from the energy of your clothes, which is recharged after a short period of time. Changing clothing styles is often necessary, and changing your position in the spotlight is only fun if it causes confusion among Koreans.

Weapons in Crysis 1:

Your weapons inventory is pretty limited for this variant, as there are several assault rifles, sniper rifles, machine guns, as well as some interesting pieces, such as submachine guns or Gauss pistols. There are also deadly grenades, rocket launchers or fireworks, and smoke grenades. What makes Crysis somewhat unique is its weapon changes, where you can add multiple add-ons without pausing the game. It’s a feature I wish were more common today. You can get weapon attachments from enemies or their camps.

Since there are so many explosives, you may wonder if the environment has been damaged. Yes, in part. Many enemy towers, huts, and civilian boxes have been destroyed, and items without them can injure or kill your enemies. Unfortunately, some buildings may only be damaged by a documented incident or not at all. However, grabbing the poor Korean by the collar and throwing him into obstacles is enough to do it for him.

Audiovisuals & Performance

Crysis still offers gorgeous graphics, tons of little details, and gorgeous graphics. It’s definitely a bit of a surprise compared to other games released in 2007. The soundtrack can make for a great atmosphere, but it’s not something I listen to often. An interesting addition is that Koreans speak their mother tongue to a very heavy standard.

The game was tested with an i5 8300H, GTX 1060 6 GB, and 16 GB of RAM, running at high settings at 60 frames per second, with a resolution of 1920×1080. There may be a problem launching the game on Windows 10, so I advise you to use this guide. Solving this problem takes about two minutes.

Pros:

  • The story is well written even if it is a little sketchy at times
  • The graphics are on point, not up to current standards but still look good.
  • The sound is well designed.
  • The clothing mechanic is a nice touch, but lacking.

Cons:

  • Many gameplay mechanics feel clumsy and underpowered
  • The game does not support higher resolutions
  • Multiplayer is dead (but no wonder)
  • The soundtrack  is “meh”.

Conclusion

Even after all these years, the original Crysis still manages to provide an enjoyable single-player experience with enough variety for any setting. Despite its flaws, it’s definitely a first-person shooter that fans should try out if they haven’t already. Not the greatest of FPS games, but still by today’s standards.

Crysis was certainly a graphical and PC powerhouse at the time of its launch. But by today’s standards it is much lower in many ways. It has a well-crafted story and is indeed a well-crafted game, however tight controls and cliché story points get in the way of its overall feel. Even the costume mechanic that is fun as it is and offers some power points is boring and boring if you run out of energy for seconds. Still an overall good game, not the best FPS out there for its time though. But a good game is rare.
