Story:

The story of the Book of Demons is very simple, you are a hero/adventurer who returns to your old village and there is a problem, a demon! You have to get down and out before your village is the one that bites the dust. It’s not particularly new, but the story isn’t meant to be the main draw of this game all things considered (although you do get some nice bits as you go along).

However, many people may not know this, but the “Devil’s Book” is just a series of books that devs intended to create. The first of seven, I’m not too sure where they’re going to go, but if that sort of thing interests you then you might want to keep an eye out for future releases as I do.

Gameplay:

Well, it might be best to first describe how you actually play because it’s a bit hard to tell from the gameplay in my opinion. Suffice it to say that you can play this game with one hand if you want, everything revolves around left mouse click, attacks, item usage, movement, etc. Personally, I use WASD to move, but knowing this can be difficult for some.

The game revolves around several things, but the main one is the deck-building aspect. Some familiar with the style will understand that this likely means that you are getting cards to use in a minute as you progress through the game, and you are absolutely right! Cards for combat are defined in three specific types, artifact cards (weapon items that give some bonuses, such as a chance to block, being unimpeded by webs, giving fire elements to attacks, etc.), item cards (medicine and such as those), and spell cards (cooldown abilities like an AoE attack that consumes mana).

You will be very limited in what you can use from your deck of cards, starting with 3 and having to deal and open a total of 9 cards. How you want to fight can dramatically change how you progress through the dungeon, and therefore makes the game very flexible (whether it’s a full walkthrough or a certain level) as there are a huge number of There are card combinations that can be used.

You can focus heavily on spellcasting with mana regeneration or go the other way around and focus on your physical combat abilities for example. The game also offers a roguelike mode, multiple challenges, and three types of characters (warrior, rogue, mage) each with their own unique strengths.

Pros:

A simple story that sets a nice premise for the game
Isometric deck builder with hack and slash battles
High replayability with a variety of possible card combinations
Interesting art direction using paper boxes

Cons:

Fair warning, the art style may not work for everyone, even if you enjoy the genres used.
Depending on how you play, it can get monotonous for some

Graphics / Visuals:

Book of Demons has a unique take on what their game looks like, especially considering their already impressive mix of genres. Paper bags that do the way they do in most video games aren’t usually my thing, but I really appreciated that Thing Trunk went his own way with his vision for the game.

Conclusion:

The gameplay is good fun, and the art is nice but it also acts as a double-edged sword, but if you can get past that then you have a great experience on your hands. The story is a bit on the weak side, but Book of Demons easily makes up for it in its gameplay and discovery. So, if you’re looking for a bang for your buck, then this is definitely a title to consider.
