ULTRAKILLis made by a developer who knows his audience, and his game design choices show it. In this early access build, you have an arsenal of five different weapons with two or more alternate versions you can carry at once and two different pistols.
They all have their unique uses. My favorite weapons are the Marksman Revolver (which allows you to trigger a skill by hitting a coin in the air) and the Pump Charge Shotgun (which allows you to charge up the power of your shot and allows you to fire more, eliminating enemies around you. ). The variety of this game allows the player to be encouraged to switch weapons often to avoid animations and weapons faster.
ULTRAKILL (ACT 2 Update) is a game that looks and feels like a first-person shooter. It’s simple, it’s easy to learn, but it’s hard to learn, with weapons that feel great to use and a difficulty curve that doesn’t move, ie: hard on one level, easy on another. Consistency is key, and Ultrakill is just that, consistent.
Story
The story is left vague for ULTRAKILL. However, there are some bits and pieces of information to be told about the game. Humanity has disappeared. Machines were used to help maintain stability in civilization or to help with everyday things like cleaning polluted air.
However, at some point, these machines committed a crime against humanity and may have had something to do with the downfall of humanity. They are consumed by blood and some of them have decided to descend into hell to get more of it and have even adapted to the energy of hell to kill more effectively.
Gameplay
You play as V1, a very dirty robot that will fight against various enemies like Filth, Stalkers and Stray. You will need some weapons to do the job and the game gives you the tools you need. I’m talking about revolvers, shotguns, nails, iron balls, and a few other things.
To heal yourself, you’ll need to get close to enemies to absorb their blood, so the closer you get, the more health you’ll get. You can even get your hands on so-called weapons, which are real arms that you can equip for [b[V1[/b]. There are only three of these so far, but my personal favorite has to be the Knuckleblaster, where you punch an enemy and then your knuckle explodes, dealing massive damage and sending enemies flying.
This is an action shooter, so you must always move to avoid getting hit. If you’re not good then you’re just going to die, a lot, but you’re also going to die a lot because this game can get really hard. However, the difficulty is fair, so you won’t feel cheated.
At the end of some levels, you will fight a boss and they can prove to be quite difficult, especially the last boss of the chapter. They are like a giant path that you need to go through in order to progress in the game.
There’s also Cyber Grind, a mode where you’ll be able to fight an endless stream of enemies that even the bosses look like regular enemies. The pods on the grid change each round and will support in different ways how you approach and take out enemies. You can even customize the design of the area, such as creating patterns or a sky box.
The only problem I have with ULTRAKILL, the problem I found was that ULTRAKILL can get kind of tiral. When I finished playing the main game, there was nothing for me to really do in my eyes that felt new or interesting enough to play more.
Soundtrack
The soundtrack is fantastic, there are some really cool tunes to listen to while killing enemies or dying. My two favorite tracks would have to be Divine Intervention and The Cyber Grind. These two songs only came to me but there are other songs that are also good to listen to.
Graphics and Performance
The graphics for the game have this retro 90’s 3D style to them. Despite the game’s dark themes, they felt colorful and alive. You can go inside a temple in the desert through a beautiful garden. I tested the game on an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 3GB, AMD Ryzen 5 1500X Quad-Core Processor 3.50, and 16 GB of RAM. I had no issues while playing and it ran really well at 60 FPS.
Pros:
- Fast fighting with challenging gameplay
- Fun weapons that can be used in a variety of ways to help take out enemies
- A fantastic sound that is just awesome to listen to
- Cool 90s based graphics that look really cool
Cons:
- Once you beat all the levels, the game might get boring after a while
Final Decision
Although it is in early access, ULTRAKILL is a very fun FPS with great gameplay and is perfect for those looking for a challenge. If you’re a fan of games like Doom, then I honestly think you’ll enjoy what’s on offer here and I can really recommend the game.
However, waiting for sales is another option you can do but it depends on your view on the game. It’s only 22.79 CDN so I think it’s worth the price it is now. Overall a solid game for those who like fast games, full of secrets for you to find, I tried to stay away from the bosses and some other things you can find so you can find them yourself.
