Let, Today we will talk about this Video Game and I will share my experience with everyone.

The game is clearly a passion project, from the creators. That becomes evident from the start. Than trying to revolutionize the genre it embraces tried and tested design principles that have unfortunately been neglected in more recent RPGs.

The game is a labor of love from the creators and you can tell right away. It doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel but instead relies on tried and true design principles that have been woefully forgotten in more modern RPGs.

Story

The story doesn’t burden your character with a ton of backstory, and that’s a good thing. You are a space captain who escapes by abandoning your main ship on a shuttle when it runs out of fuel and you have to find a way for a fuel controller to clear nearby debris and bring your main ship back to Earth. Have to find. This premise is very simple and works in favor of the game. This leaves you, as the player, free to pursue the objective as you wish.

The rest of the story has to do with the bits and pieces of terminal data you find on the wreckage and the information you learn from other NPCs. It has more to do with world building than some kind of personal storytelling as it encourages you to create your own captain’s story through the choices you make. On the global construction front, it does a good job. I wouldn’t say it’s the most innovative or mind-blowing sequence ever, but what there is is well done.

It has a slightly darker tone and that classic post-apocalyptic feel, but in space. In the game you face different factions and each have their own motivations and ideologies, all of which seem very real and connected. In that sense my immersion was never broken throughout the game.

Although the game is very short, there is enough content for at least 3-4 replays since one sees about 30% or less of the entire game in each playthrough.

Gameplay:

The gameplay excels in what it strives to achieve – complete freedom to do whatever you want, whenever you want. There are almost no cutscenes in this game (except between levels) that prevent you from pulling out a gun and shooting someone in the head (and you can kill every NPC in this game if you want).

This kind of game design is sorely needed today (unlike a recent space exploration game where half the NPCs are ‘necessary’…) which used to feel like a dead art. Fortunately, the entire game is designed around this principle and you have multiple ways to solve each problem, both in and out of dialogue.

Want to get through a closed door? Pick it up. Don’t have a hair pan? Open the vent next to it and crawl through. Don’t have a screwdriver? Hack the nearest terminal. Can’t hack? Kill the drone guarding the dead guard that has the key card. This design philosophy is present throughout the game from start to finish and is central to the game’s brilliance.

Overall:

Space Wreck Download is an amazing game. I would recommend this game to anyone who appreciates proper RPG design and execution. Despite its short length, the game has a fairly open design for expansions/dlcs/patches that can extend the game’s playtime even further and build on its already great systems.
