Call of the Wild: The Angler is a fun and relaxing fishing game that greatly rewards exploration, one that hardly deserves the hate it gets. It’s currently a 3.5/5, not the worst thing on Steam. I’ve just finished in a few hours, and I’m looking forward to playing several more – anyone who says it’s “unplayably bad” is just being dishonest.

Like theHunter at launch, the game has a ways to go before it’s the best, but I believe it’s worth the value I’ve paid and will be enjoying completing challenges and exploring distant bodies of water to see the contents of them. theHunter has progressed from a slightly rocky launch to a great game with some regrettable but fairly priced extras, I think the game has a lot of untapped potential and many things along the way.

Pros:

• No overly grindy, F2P nonsense–nothing more gated
  for in-game currency for equipment and cosmetics
• Beautiful scenery (except for the water, which should have taken priority IN THE FISHING GAME)
• Rod action looks and feels good
• Recognition of the type of retrieval (e.g. twitching, jigging, etc) is fast and accurate
• Cars and boats are inexpensive
• Large open world with some places of interest
• A good start to needed MORE CONTENT

Cons:

• Lots of mistakes, frequent breakdowns
• The effect of water is not very good
• Currently, there is no ability to change the time of day manually
• Floating objects sink. What???
• Sometimes fish are more visible in the water
• An embarrassingly limited character creator

This game is exactly what it should be. The “light” fishing scene. Like Call of the Wild, theHunter is a “light” hunting simulator. If you want to play a realistic fishing simulator, you should stick with RF4.

Like theHunter, the game obviously needs some time to develop. As many have said before me, if you know EW, just let them do their job. Those who played theHunter on release will surely understand. The development team was that great and what they have already developed is more than solid.

Granted, it’s not perfect yet and there are lots of things to improve, but it’s definitely not Early Access and there are lots of things to do besides fish IF YOU WANT. You don’t have to run around looking for hidden objects or infected plants when you don’t need them. Completely optional! But I definitely encourage you to do it and enjoy the beautifully designed space. You won’t find a better open world than EW.

Overall:

Ultimately, I prefer a fishing game that costs half the normal triple-A price and has no in-game store or premium fees, and as such EW’s DLC prices always are good for what you get in return, I don’t regret my purchase. If the Devs continue to perform well (like in theHunter) they could easily be 90/100 or more for the fishing game and/or open-world players.
