Book Quest is an action-adventure RPG presented in a retro pixel art style featuring cinematic cutscenes and dialogue. Throughout this medieval fantasy, the play alternates between top-down and side-scrolling perspectives.
Dodge roll and execute melee attacks, collect valuable items, solve environmental puzzles, equip new gear as you progress, and participate in unique mini-games as you travel between areas of the map! This is a nostalgic adventure suitable for all ages, whether you’re a seasoned player who remembers the classics of the genre or a newcomer just learning the ropes.
Book Quest is a Pixel RPG with lots of things going for it and some things holding it back. Let’s get into this.
The Positive:
It has that classic pixel zelda’ish look to it that makes it easy on the eyes. The music is funky, fun, and catchy. It features unique side-scroll sections that link the gameplay from a dominant top-down view. There are a variety of items, enemies, and things to do that give that RPG/Quest itch a nice scratch.
The Negatives:
The game is too strong in its structure. For example, I have 40 berries on my list; The NPC needs 20 to make a pie. I need to go collect 20 new berries to complete the quest. Again, you have to do everything in order. I made it back to town but couldn’t visit a blacksmith or fishing guy without completing many more quests before being allowed to contact them. Also, there is a lot of backtracking where the run option can be a gift from the gods.
Overall:
Overall, not as bad as some have made it out to be. The game starts off slow and takes time to invest in but is far from boring. There are a number of other games in this genre that are very high quality, but there are way more games that are much worse than I can assure you. I would suggest picking it up on sale and trying it out for yourself. $5 seems like the value this game will have so you can get your full enjoyment out of it without feeling ripped off.
